This is MOMENTOUS.

One morning, just before my birthday, when I had to work the 6 am shift at work, I spent some time making up a very special list.
A list of:
20 Things to Do Before I'm 21.
(I actually got this idea from Elsie of Red Velvet Art, and I think it's a great one!)
I don't have the book that contains the list on me right now, so I can't share it all.
But one very important item on this list was:

To get back in contact with my biological father.

I haven't seen him since I was about 9 years old.
The last time I was ever contacted by him I was 12 years old, and it was a birthday card.
And before that, I have very few memories of him.
Just little things here and there.
He and my mom divorced when I was just a little baby.

I do have a "Dad" in my life, and that's a huge blessing.
He's been there for me since I was five years old.
But I've naturally been curious about my "father" since basically forever.
I've wanted to contact him for a long time, but wasn't really sure how.
And if I figured out how, I wasn't really sure what I'd do or say.
What if he didn't want to hear from me?
What if he rejected me?
Obvious fears.

But I told myself that this would be the year that I did it.
Surprisingly, it turned out that it wouldn't be me taking the first step.
But...
It wasn't him, either.

On Easter Sunday, via facebook, I received a message from a woman named Josephine.
She was looking for her niece and that was me.
She told me some family history and about my father.
He lives in North Carolina.
He's been married for 11 years.
He has two young sons, named River and Austin.
He'll be getting his bachelor's degree this year in Ceramics and Clay.
She told me that she knew if he heard from me it would "make him the happiest man on earth."
I hope that's true.

This is such a big thing for me.
And I just had to share it with you all.
I'll definitely be updating about this, here and there. :)

  7. wow wow wow! what an incredible opportunity!! best of luck to you and i hope it's wonderful!

on a semi-related note... i've always been curious about my grandma and step-grandpa. they were killed when i was six months old. about a year ago, i googled my grandma's name and someone had posted something a week prior to that about how my grandma was her most influential teacher ever. they kept in contact after this lady graduated high school via snail mail and the last letter my grandma ever sent her had my name in it!! it was very cool to make that connection. you are very lucky you still have the chance to contact the one you are missing! very excited for you!

  10. How neat! You just gained an aunt and two brothers. And that's very intriguing about your dad's degree--it sounds like he's a artist at heart. And now you have a big ol' green light to contact him. I'm so excited for you. I hope it's everything you dream it will be :)
